So I stopped looking for that 100 percent commonality with the people that I met. 

→ 그래서 나는 내가 만났던 사람들과 함께 100% 공통점을 찾는 것을 멈췄다.

▣ looking for : 찾다, 수사하다

▣ commonality : ①공통성 ②보통, 평범

Instead, I realized that oftentimes, I was the only overlap between groups of people 

→ 대신에 나는 종종 깨달았다. 나는 오로지 어떤 그룹이 사람들과만 겹친다는 것을,

▣ oftentimes : 종종 (=often)

▣ overlap : 겹치다, 겹쳐지다, 포개지다

that were usually in conflict with each other. 

→ (앞에 어떤 그룹의 사람들을 수식) 항상 서로 서로 충돌하는...

▣ conflict with : 모순되다, 충돌하다

▣ each other : 서로

So with this realization in mind, 

→ 그래서 내 마음속에서 깨달음과 함께

▣ realization : ①깨달음 ②자각 ③인지

I decided to embrace all of the different versions of myself –

→ 나는 나의 안에 있는 모든 다름을 포옹하기로 결정했다.

 

▣ embrace : (껴)안다, 포옹하다

even allow myself to reinvent myself at times. 

→ 심지어 그때 내 자신에게 다른 모습을 보여주는 것을 허용하다,

▣ reinvent : 다른 모습(이미지)를 보여주다.

▣ allow A to B : A가 B하는 것을 허락하다.

So for example, in high school, I have to confess I was a mega-nerd. 

→그래서 예를 들면 고등학교 때, 나는 내가 완전범생이라는 것에 대해 시인해야만 했다.

▣ confess : 자백하다, 시인하다, 사실대로 불다.

▣ mega-nerd : 완전범생

(nerd : 멍청하고 따분한 사람)

I had no sense of fashion – thick glasses, simple hairstyle -- 

→ 나는 패션에 대한 감각도 없었다. 두꺼운 안경에 심플한 헤어스타일,

you can get the idea. 

→ 너는 여기서 아이디어를 얻을 수 있다.

I think, actually, I only had friends because I shared my homework.

→ 사실 나는 생각하다. 나는 오로지 친구들이 있다. 왜냐면 내 숙제를 보여주었기 때문에.

That's the truth. But once at university, 

→ 그건 사실이다. 그러나 대학교를 들어갈 때

▣ once : ①~하자마자 ②할 때

①한 번 ②언젠가(한때/한동안) ③한번도.

I was able to find a new identity for myself, and the nerd became a popular girl. 

→ 나는 내 스스로 위해 새로운 정체성을 찾을 수 있었다. 그리고 따분한 사람은 유명한 여자가 되었다.

▣ be able to : ~을 할 수 있다.

But it was MIT, so I don't know if I can take too much credit for that. 

그러나 내가 '메사추세츠 공과 대학' 있었을 때, 나는 몰랐었다. 

내가 그것에 대하여 인정을 받을 수 있다는 것에 대하여.

▣ MIT : 매사추세츠 공과 대학 (=Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

▣ get[have, take] credit for : ~의 공적을 인정받다, ~으로 명성을 얻다.

As they say over there, "The odds are good, but the goods are odd." 

→그들이 거기서 되풀이 해서 말하는 것 처럼,

"특이한 것은 좋은거야, 그건 좋은 것은 특이한거야" 

▣ say over : 되풀이 해서 말하다.

▣ odd : 이상한, 특이한

I switched majors so many times that my advisors joked 

→나는 전공을 여러번 바꿨고, 나의 조언자는 우스개 소리로 말했다.

▣ advisor : 고문, 조언자

▣ joke : 우스개(하는소리), 농담

that I should get a degree in "random studies."

→ 나는 "랜덤 스터디"란 학위를 받아야만 한다고

 

I told this to my kids. 

→ 나는 내 아이들에게 이걸 얘기했다.

And then over the years, I have gained a lot of different identities. 

→ 그리고 나서 몇 년이 지나고, 나는 많은 다양한 다른 정체성들을 얻었다.

I started as an inventor, entrepreneur, social innovator. 

→ 나는 발명가, 사업가, 사회적 혁신가로써 시작했다.

▣ inventor : 발명가, 창안자

▣ entrepreneur : 사업가, 기업가

▣ social innovator : 사회적 혁신자

Then I became an investor, a woman in tech, a teacher. And most recently, 

→ 그리고 나서 나는 발명가, 선생으로써 가르키는 여자(?)가 되었다. 

그리고 최근에는 더 많다....

I became a mom, or as my toddler says repeatedly, "Mom!" day and night.

→ 나는 엄마가 되었다. 나의 걸음마를 배우는 아이가 끊임없이 여러차례 "엄마!"라고 부른다.

▣ toddler : 걸음마를 배우는 아이

▣ repeatedly : 되풀이하여, 반복적으로, 여러차례

▣ day and night : 주야로, 끊임없이

Even my accent was so confused -- 

→ 심지어 나의 액센트도 혼동이 온다.

▣ confuse : 혼란시키다.

its origin was so obscure, that my friends called it, "Rebecanese." 

→  기원성은 잘 알려져 있지 않다, 그래서 내 친구는 그것을 "Rebecanese"라고 부른다.

▣ origin : 기원, 근원

▣ obscure : 잘 알려져 있지 않은, 무명의 

But reinventing yourself can be very hard. 

→ 그러나 너 스스로를 재창조하는 것은 매우 어려울 수 있다.

▣ reinvent : 다른 모습(이미지)을 보여주다.

You can face a lot of resistance at times. 

→ 너는 그때 많은 저항에 직면할 수 있다.

▣ resistance : 저항, 반대

When I was nearly done with my PhD, I got bitten by that entrepreneurial bug. 

→ 내가 거의 박사학위를 가졌을 때, 나는 기업가적인 벌레에 의해 물렸다.

▣ phD : 박사학위 (Doctor of Philosophy)

▣ nearly : 거의

▣ get bit : 먹다, 물리다.

▣ entrepreneurial bug : 기업가적인 벌레

I was in Silicon Valley, and so writing a thesis in the basement didn't seem as interesting as starting my own company.

→ 나는 실리콘 벨리에 있었다. 그리고 지하에서 학위논문을 쓰는 것은 

내 스스로의 회사를 시작하는 것만큼 즐겁게 보이질 않았다.

▣ thesis : 학위논문

▣ seem as : ~처럼 보이다.

▣ as ~ as : ~만큼

 

So I went to my very traditional Korean parents, who are here today, 

→ 그래서 나는 오늘 여기에 있는 전통 한국적인 부모님에게 매우 하고 싶다. 

with the task of letting them know that I was going to drop out from my PhD program.

→ 이 일을 그들이 알게 하고 싶다. that  나의 박사학위를 그만둘꺼라고. 

▣ drop out : 빠지다, 떨어져 나가다, 탈퇴하다

You see, my siblings and I are the first generation to go to university, so for a family of immigrants, 

→ 너는 본다. 나의 여동생과 나는 대학교로 가는 첫번째 세대이다. 이민자 가족에 적용되는.

▣ sibling : 형제자매

▣ so for : ~에 적용되는 

this was kind of a big deal. You can imagine how this conversation was going to go. 

→ 이것은 중대한 사건이다. 너는 어떻게 이 대화가 진행될 것인지 상상할 수 있을 것이다. 

 

▣ a big deal : 대단한 것, 중대 사건, 큰 거래

▣ imagine : 상상하다, (마음 속으로) 그리다

But fortunately, I had a secret weapon with me, which was a chart that had the average income 

→ 그러나 다행히도 나는 나만의 비밀 무기를 가지고 있다. 그건 평균 수입을 가지는 도표...

▣ chart : 도표, 차트

▣ average income : 평균수입

of all of the graduates from Stanford PhD programs, and then the average income

→ 스탠포드 박사학위를 받는 모든 졸업생들의

▣ graduates : 대학 졸업자

and then the average income of all the dropouts from Stanford graduate programs.

→ 그리고 스탠포드 졸업자 프로그램의 중퇴자들의 평균 임금

▣ dropout : 중퇴자

 

I must tell you -- this chart was definitely skewed by the founders of Google. 

→ 나는 너에게 꼭 말하고 싶다. 이 차트는 분명히 구글의 창립자에 의해 왜곡될 것이다. 

▣ definitely : 분명히, 틀림없이

▣ skew : 왜곡하다

▣ founder : 창립자, 설립자

But my mom looked at the chart, and she said, "Oh, for you -- follow your passion." 

→ 그러나 나의 엄마는 이 차드를 봤다. 그리고는 '오, 너를 위한 너의 열정에 따르렴'

Hi, Mom. 

→ 안녕, 엄마 ㅋㅋㅋ
